Layla's Weblog
Layla
came into our lives a year and a
half ago at the age of 3 months.
Her first visit to the vet
revealed that Layla had a grade 5
heart murmur (grade 6 is as bad
as it gets), a congenital heart
defect and other heart related
problems. We were told that Layla
would not live to see her first
Birthday and that she could not
survive any kind of
surgery.
Well,
Layla is a survivor! She
underwent major open heart
surgery on December 15th and is
slowly recovering. A recent
visit to the vet showed that the
surgery was a huge success and
the heart murmur is completely
gone!!! Layla is now
expected to live a normal,
healthy life.
Layla's medical
expenses are expected to exceed
$1,500. As of February 17,
we have received over $275 in
donations. THANK YOU!
Please help us
help Layla by donating any amount
you can. Every dollar will
go directly toward Layla's
medical expenses until all costs
are met. In the event that
donations marked for
"Layla" exceed her
medical expenses, the excess will
be placed into a special fund
designated solely for other
special needs dogs.

December 16
Layla underwent
a successful open heart
surgery yesterday.
Amazingly, she is walking
around, very slowly and
cautiously. She doesn't
want to lay down; she
stands with her head
drooping and falling to
sleep. It must be very
uncomfortable for her to
lay down. She has a huge
incision from the top of
her shoulders all the way
around her chest. There
is also a little
"hole" where a
chest tube was inserted
so the surgeons could
collapse the lung while
operating. For the next 3
weeks, Layla has to stay
crated except when walked
on a leash outside and no
playing with other dogs.
This may be a challenge!
We will monitor her blood
pressure for a few months
and do an X-ray in about
3 months and again at 6
months. She has a great
outlook and her medical
team is very positive
about her recovery and
renewed life. She has a
pain patch that comes off
next Tuesday, and is
taking medication for
pain and inflammation.

December 21
Today
is the first official day
of winter and Layla is
completing her first week
of recovery from heart
surgery. What a trooper!
This little girl has a
zest for life like none
other I have seen. She
wants to get out and play
with her furry friends
and feels good enough to
run. But momma is
following the doctor's
instructions and keeping
her on a leash and
walking slowly when we go
outside. In the house,
Layla either stays in her
crate or on the bed with
her foster mom. She will
share Christmas with her
furry friends around a
Christmas tree that has
an abundance of doggy
toys and treats under it.
She asked me to say Happy
Holidays to all and to be
safe; believe in Santa
Claus, she does.

January 4
It has
been 3 weeks since the
congenital heart defect
surgery. Layla had her
stitches removed and we
are gradually starting to
increase the amount of
exercise she can have. We
have started by letting
her play for 5 minutes at
a time. Next week we can
increase it to 10 minutes
and so on. We will be
monitoring her blood
pressure as we do not
want it to go up. Our vet
listened to her heart and
there is no more heart
murmur!! Her
heart murmur is
gone! Now this
precious girl can look
forward to a long and
healthy life. We will
monitor her blood
pressure for about a
year, and in 3 months
conduct another echogram.
Thank you for all your
prayers and get well
messages! And many
thanks for all the
donations that have
helped defray the cost of
Layla's surgery.
